As part of the mental health project, Year 2 pupils explore their inner experiences in creative and age-appropriate ways, thereby building their self-confidence and emotional skills.

Mental health is an important part of children’s healthy development. This project addresses the topic in a way that is appropriate for Year 2 pupils, giving them the opportunity to explore their feelings, their strengths and their own experiences.

The project begins with the story ‘The Soul Bird’, which vividly helps the children visualise their souls. Through group discussion, they explore different emotions and recognise that all feelings have their place and are perceived or expressed to varying degrees.

As the project progresses, the pupils work with the school social worker to create a personal ‘emergency kit’. This is filled with helpful strategies and ideas that can support them in coping better with difficult or distressing feelings and in remaining capable of taking action in challenging situations.

The project concludes with the creation of a self-portrait in which the children capture their own strengths, abilities and positive qualities. This strengthens their self-awareness and fosters a positive self-image. Overall, the project helps to strengthen the children’s emotional competence and promote an open, appreciative approach to emotions.
